Sipping Gins 4 x 50mL

Some gins are great for G&T’s and cocktails. Some are really worth trying neat, with or without ice, or in a martini, where the gin can really shine. If this is not your cup of tea (and g), don’t worry, just add tonic.

Animus Printed Bg Bottle Small

Gin No. 3
Ambrosian
Animus Distillery

About the Distillery

Animus believe that gins can reach similar levels of layered complexity and depth as big, bold whiskies. The results from using a range of Australian native and international botanicals sourced sustainably are three uniquely rich Australian craft gin expressions.

Aaron, Joel, Luke and Rob are four friends with diverse backgrounds in Science, Medicine and Business Management and a shared passion for premium wine and spirits. After years of weekend ‘palate development’ and a whisky tour by Aaron and Joel of Tasmania in 2013, they joined forces. The Animus team spent two years on R&D to produce world class Australian spirits with an authentic sense of provenance. Experimentation, trial and error, extensive tasting, and occasionally heartburn, they deconstructed every aspect of gin production, then painstakingly built complex, layered recipes. With four guys and five opinions the experiments gradually evolved into their distinctive gins, launched in 2016.

Tasting Notes

Celebrating SE Asian cuisine with sesame seed and kaffir lime leaf, big citrus notes and earthy ginger, galangal and turmeric. A rich, complex modern gin. Served as a Martini with Rose’ vermouth, lime rind with fresh jasmine flower. (50% ABV).

Larrikin Bottle Small

Gin No. 4
The Larrikin Gin
Kilderkin

About the Distillery

Probably the most apt name for a gin distillery and by far the best allegory. Gin has a Dutch origin, adopted by the English centuries ago and in modern times undergoing a boom that owes much to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The word kilderkin is of Dutch origin, adopted by the English centuries ago, meaning a small cask of liquid. It is equivalent to two firkins and is still used today as the unit of choice by CAMRA. By the way, it’s about 80 litres.

Chris Pratt and Scott Wilson-Brown, plus partners Rebecca Mathews and Vanessa Wilson-Browne had been planning a distillery for far too long and decided to realise their dreams in 2016. Both men are passionate about distilling and Ballarat’s history for spirits – both ghosts and drinks – needed a firkin resurrection.

Tasting Notes

Highlights of lemon myrtle. Hints of spice and warmth from native botanicals complement the essential juniper and coriander. A well-balanced gin, with incredibly smooth mouthfeel, and amazing drinkability. Great on its own with a block of ice, try it with ginger beer or to create new mixed drinks. ABV 42%.
