About the Distillery

The guys at Hurdle Creek are a perfect union of craft skills and business smarts. Their dream is not one of grandiose designs but of the humble desire of a comfortable, rural lifestyle free from corporate demands. The tale of craft brewing from the 80s that morphed into craft distilling of the 00s is embodied here, not as a trend but as an individual who has done both.

Simon Brooke-Taylor and Wendy Williams yearned to establish their own business. With a property in Milawa, the desire was to use produce from the farm and other local ingredients. Alex Williams has the task of flogging the gin, running social media and doing all the heavy lifting. Wendy has all the finance and administrative skills to run a business and cocktail development. Simon was an ex-brewer so has beverages in the blood but brewing was no longer his desire. He began his biochemistry career in the UK brewing industry. Coming to Australia in the late ‘80s, he became part of the emerging Craft Brewing movement and has since been consulting. So the decision was: Craft Distillling. As Wendy and Simon enjoy gin and knew of the trends in the UK and Spain, Gin distilling was the obvious option.

About the Distillery

Being banished by the authorities from Launceston to the nearby Glen Ireh Estate on the banks of the South Esk River. What a memorable start! This was a good move, because during research the disposal of some faints# – flames resulting – a “weed control” burn-off occurred. The weeds were too long anyway as the 200+ cows on the estate preferred eating spent botanicals! Now why Shrek and Kermit? Read on….

Once upon a time, there were two Adams who created a “cave of wonders” and went on a mystical journey in search of the holy grail full of whisky. With help from folks at Nonesuchland, they decided to stop off at Gintopia on the way to refuel. To be continued…..

About the Distillery

Why a national disgrace? Certainly not this distillery but the shame that it was Sydney’s first in 110 years! Already well established nationally – at this early stage – but also spreading its wings onto the international scene and proudly bagging some international awards on the way. As a team of passionate new world distillers, Archie Rose. is dedicated to honouring Sydney’s rich spirit-making past, as well as being pioneers through their Limited Release gins.

Founder Will Edwards, from hobbyist origins jumped the corporate ship, like convicts past. Research in the Big Apple led Will on a journey that has only just begun. Along with Dave Withers (master distiller), Nigel Weisbaum (sales and marketing), Harriett Leigh (Venue Manager) and a host of other vital cogs in the ARD wheel, they have got business humming. Dave is a third generation wine man, born to rebel. He swapped from scrubbing huge, dirty wine vats to the hypnotic shine of a still. Nigel’s indulgence in global spirits, parties, bars and entertaining have not taken a toll. Although still young he is relatively speaking, the “old man” of the team. His bartending resume makes him the perfect or seller/cellar. Harriet was serving G&T’s as early as the age of 4. Maybe that was why she was deported (!) from the UK to this convict land.

Tasting Notes

Crafted gin with 14 botanicals, infused and individually distilled. Tradition accented by native Australian botanicals, including blood lime, Dorrigo pepperleaf, lemon myrtle and river mint. One of the most (and highest) awarded gins in Australia. Look out for PS Soda Bush Tonic as a mixer. ABV 42%.
