Gin Tasting Notes

This Australian Negroni Gift Set will include one of the following four gins:

Archie Rose Signature Gin (NSW)

This carefully crafted Signature Dry Gin uses fourteen traditional and native botanicals, each individually distilled in our 300L handmade copper pot still. Perfectly balanced and wonderfully complex, it’s accented by native Australian botanicals, including blood lime, Dorrigo pepperleaf, lemon myrtle and river mint. All underpinned with pronounced juniper.

Patient Wolf – Melbourne Dry (VIC)

Melbourne Dry Gin is appropriately named after our hometown and where our distillery is. We spent years making, creating, refining our first gin. A process that seemed endless at the time but was obvious when it arrived. The result is a considered creation and a gin that is big, bold and complex, yet is incredibly smooth and balanced.

Seppeltsfield Rd – House Gin (SA)

Listed as #21 in the Top 100 Spirits in the world, Seppeltsfield Road Distillers’ ‘House Gin’ is a contemporary gin that balances fresh citrus on subtle juniper notes. Chamomile and locally grown Barossa lavender adds a delicate depth, while blue cornflowers provide a beautiful, bright sweetness.

McHenry Distillery – Classic Dry Gin (TAS)

An elegant smooth Gin – like a magic carpet ride of the botanicals. Citrus peel is present and balanced with a small amount of star anise, coriander seeds, cardamon and orris root all beautifully balanced with the juniper.

Vermouth Tasting Notes

Each pack also includes one of the following:

Regal Rouge – Australian Rosso Vermouth

Regal Rogue is Australia’s first native Vermouth, marrying the best of Australian wine with aromatics sourced from the outback. Made in small batches of 250 cases, they have just released a limited run of their 750ml bottles for 2014. Their Rosso Vermouth (a slightly sweet, mildly bitter style) is created from a base of Semillon with a hint of Shiraz and up to 20 aromatics including native wattleseed, pepperberry, thyme, a hint of orange, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

Adelaide Hills Distillery – Rosso Vermouth

The distillery’s homeland of South Australia is known for red wine and old vine Grenache that emanates from the depths of McLaren Vale. Casting characteristics of raspberry and blueberry with nuances of spice, chocolate and tobacco, this is the perfect foundation to craft our Rosso Vermouth. A generous handful of our imported traditional blend of 36 Torino roots, herbs and spices, that have been stored since the 1960s, add vanilla, spice and a rounded herbal tone. They then add their signature Australian touch with a late addition of anise myrtle and quandong, then utilise the citrus characteristics of sunrise lime and finger lime to cut through the unctuous nature of the Grenache.

Bitter Orange Tasting Notes

Each pack also includes one of the following:

Adelaide Hills Distillery – Bitter Orange

An Australian expression marrying traditional European bittering herbs with predominantly Australian ingredients at its core. The nose is herbal, floral and bursting with bright Riverland orange. The palate is deliciously bitter, fresh and citrus-driven.

Applewood Distillery – økar island bitter

Riberries aren’t the only stars in this beverage. Alongside we see Lemon Myrtle, Gentian Root, Licorice Root, Wormwood, Sweet Orange Peel, Cassia Bark and Cinchona Bark, just to name a few. Red Okar is the big brother of Okar, a higher alcohol aperitif with a more intense Riberry hit.

The History of the Negroni Cocktail

This classic concoction has more than stood the test of time. It was over 100 years ago that Count Negroni asked his bartender at the Cassoni Cafe on the Via de’ Tornabuoni to stiffen his Americano by replacing the soda with gin. History records that the bartender, one Fosco Scarselli, also replaced the lemon with an orange slice you’d usually get with an Americano, and the drink took off. Before long, everyone was coming into the bar for a ‘Negroni.’ Did he add the bitters as well? The legends do not tell.
